Working Towards A Sustainable Future

Leadership forum : Ms. Padmashree Balaram

We are privileged to have Ms. Padmashree Balaram at this year’s SIMUN VI Leadership Forum. Her work reflects a hopeful vision for climate action and sustainability, demonstrating that knowledge, determination, and leadership can be wielded to address the global climate challenge.

With a Master’s degree in Biochemistry from the esteemed Institute of Science, Mumbai, and over 20 years of experience as a chemistry professor, Ms. Padmashree has leveraged her scientific expertise and passion for the environment to drive meaningful change. Her journey towards sustainability began in her Koramangala community, where she established decentralized waste management systems that process over 20 tonnes of segregated waste daily, significantly reducing carbon emissions.

Ms. Padmashree’s pioneering work continues as the head of Bangalore’s Swacha Belaku initiative, which aims to transform the city into a seven-star waste management district in accordance with Swachh Bharat standards. Her efforts to recycle trash from Madiwala Market for use in gaushalas, piggeries, and communal kitchens demonstrate her innovative approach to sustainability. Speaking at the India Today Environment Conclave 2025, she shared an inspiring example of how a simple idea—showing sanitation workers how organic waste could benefit cattle at a goshala—sparked widespread change. This hands-on approach encouraged better waste segregation and reaffirmed her belief that small, localized actions can create ripples of meaningful impact.

Beyond her role as a TEDx speaker and her affiliation with the NSRCEL incubator at IIM Bangalore, Ms. Padmashree is a mentor and public speaker who advocates for policy implementation and behavioral change. Her activities have a substantial influence on communities, earning her recognition as a leader in environmental sustainability.

Ms. Padmashree’s personal journey is marked by adaptability and resilience, as she deftly navigates challenges. Driven by passion for what she does, she tirelessly inspires others around her to contribute to a sustainable future. Her knowledge and experience would be a valuable addition to SIMUN VI, and we look forward to having the learning from her!
